Leader/Times Column 2nd September 2016

Despite Parliament still being in recess until Monday, my busy summer across Pendle continues.  For many Pendle families the last few weeks have been quite stressful.  The publication of A level and GSCE results, always means lots of nervous young people and lots of anxious parents.  The results mark the culmination of years of hard work for pupils, teachers and parents and they should be congratulated on their achievements.

On Wednesday night I was delighted to join Nelson & College students to help celebrate the achievements of some of their outstanding students at the annual Star Students Awards. I wish them all the very best of luck as their head off to university.

On Thursday I met with representatives from the DVSA regarding the proposed closure of the Driving Test Centre on Cobden Street, Nelson. Like the most residents, I want to see the centre remain in Nelson and I will keep residents updated as the matter progresses.

I was also pleased to see this week that Lancashire County Council have dropped their proposal to cut all funding for women’s refuges and homeless shelters. This is something which I raised in the House of Commons, as these facilities aren’t often very visible, for obvious reasons, but they do an incredibly important job. I would like to pay particular tribute to Pendle residents John and Penny Clough for the campaign they led to make the County Council think again.

It was also great to see Colne host another excellent Blues festival.  This year new innovations such as Pendle Hippodrome hosting the British Stage and more acoustic spots around the town really added to the atmosphere. I would like to thank Alison and all her team at the Leisure Trust for their efforts, as even though the event only lasts for one weekend, it is the culmination of months and months of planning.
