Pendle MP, Andrew Stephenson, is joining the campaign launched by residents of the Carr Hall area of Barrowford and Nelson against Pendle Borough Councils proposal to sell off the land known as the Fun Fair Site, Carr Road, Nelson. Outraged local residents first heard of the sell off after the proposal was added to the November meeting of Nelson Area Committee by Council Leader Cllr Iqbal. With no members of the public present to put forward their concerns Councillors backed the sale and its now likely to be rubber stamped by the Pendle Council Executive on Thursday 8th December. Local residents have started a petition against the sell off and Nelson Town Council have offered to take the land on and protect it for community use, however this offer has so far been rejected by Pendle Borough Council.
Commenting on the proposals, Andrew Stephenson MP said, “The residents of Carr Hall have a right to be outraged, the Labour Council Leader, Cllr Iqbal, is clearly trying to railroad the selloff of this community land without any meaningful public consultation, why else would such an important decision be added as an emergency item if not to circumvent public scrutiny. I know several local voluntary groups and clubs that have been interested in the site in recent months but their interest has come to nothing and perhaps we now know why.”
Andrew continued, “I would urge all residents who have concerns about the proposals to attend the Council Executive meeting on Thursday night and speak against this proposal and demand Pendle Council at the very least retain this community land.”
The Pendle Council Executive will decide on the future of the site on Thursday 8th December, Nelson Town Hall.
