Andrew Stephenson, MP for Pendle, has added his voice to those worried about the decline in the hedgehog population.
Signing an Early Day Motion calling for the Government to back a campaign to bring in legislation to protect hedgehogs, Andrew explained, “The hedgehog population in the UK has plummeted. There were around 35 million back in the 1950s but less than a million left today.”
The campaign is being led by former MP Anne Widdicombe and the Wildlife Aid Foundation and already has the support of 25 MPs. It even has celebrity support from X-factor judge Simon Cowell.
Andrew added, “New roads and the loss of countryside are largely driving the decimation of the population, which will be facing extinction if the trend continues. We need to do something to protect hedgehogs.” |
